Oil & Gas/Energy

AZA represents some of the country’s largest oil & gas and energy companies in all sorts of complex commercial litigation. The firm often handles trade secret and intellectual property matters for the energy sector.

A few of examples from AZA energy sector cases in the last few years include:

  • AZA took over a case from a nationally respected Houston firm with extremely experienced lawyers and devised a new winning strategy for a large energy company in a $93 million real estate contamination suit. AZA reframed the dispute by developing an inventive argument based on contractual analysis and complex federal bankruptcy law.
  •  An energy products company had lost all hope in a $32 million arbitration when it hired AZA late in the game. Through creative discovery and using an ancillary enforcement action, AZA obtained an order in state district court commanding the client’s chief competitor to comply with subpoenas for sales documents. This creative solution forced a far more favorable confidential settlement than AZA’s client dreamed possible.
  • AZA was hired by an energy sector tool company shortly before trial in a $35 million breach of warranty energy sector case. AZA won a continuance and identified counterclaims for breach of contract. Six months after AZA took over, the demand was cut in half. Nine months after AZA entered the case, the tables turned so much, the plaintiff paid AZA’s client a confidential settlement.
  •  AZA defended an oilfield services provider against damages claims totaling $8 million for alleged trademark infringement and dilution brought by competitor. AZA defeated the infringement claims and managed to get the contested trademark dissolved as generic/descriptive. The court issued a final judgment awarding AZA’s client its litigation costs.

AZA’s unique trial and courtroom experience sets it apart from other oil & gas and energy firms.
